I bet we could trade really amazing family tales.

I grew up the fourth daughter in my house, with a younger brother after me. We have stories for days, memories we laugh about that we’ll retell over and over. There’s one sister who inevitably ended up in her room during most family dinners—her mischievous sense of humor had the rest of us stifling giggles while dad, with a disapproving tone, ordered her to go to her room.

There’s the sister who has the biggest heart you’ll ever meet. She’ll do anything for anyone and she can make friends everywhere she goes. But if she ever offers to make dinner, make sure you eat ahead of time cause it won’t be served til 9pm. She operates on her own clock.

My other sister had a reputation that preceded all of us. She’s the super athletic one, which is one reason she was well known, but she was also a troublemaker with a charm that could get her out of almost anything. When I went to high school and I faced the school dean in a controversial situation, he eased up when he found out I was her younger sister. Her notorious likability worked in my favor a couple of times.

And my brother…well he was my first real friend. We used to set booby traps around the house, fantasizing like we were the 3 Ninjas or Kevin in Home Alone. We also crammed our backpacks full of stuffed animals and smuggled them into preschool where they were, for some reason, banned. We’re still scheming and laughing together. He called me a month ago about joining forces to carry out a secret mission (aka prank) at Christmas. Stay tuned.

While my siblings and I are all still close friends, we live in all different states—my parents, too. So each year by about June, we’re excitedly planning for our Christmas get-together—where it’ll be, what we’ll be eating, what adventures we’ll include, and who’s sleeping in the rambunctious quarters versus the quiet quarters. We now have our own little families with 10 kids between us, so the family chaos and fun has only amplified.

You could take away all the presents, the eggnog, the festive lights and even the mashed potatoes, and we would still have the best Christmas. There’s nothing more special or fun (or sometimes maddening) than being with family.
